In general, the four-session packs are best for the momentum, safety, and relationship building we’ll be doing together, and they’re especially good for getting good momentum right from the start.

Most of my clients opt for subscriptions through PayPal after the first month. This way, the billing is automated and we get to spend 100% of our session on the things you’re coming in to work with. If you need a different arrangement, let’s discuss that when we meet.

My skills in that arena then took me into work with domestic violence shelters, alternative high schools, and other “high intensity” places… and I learned things at each one about talking with people who were going through tough stuff.

What started out as survival (leaving home) turned into meaningful work – and that evolved into my getting my own counseling and learning some great methods of working with people – but none of this left much time for school. Then I came to Oregon and got certified as a hypnotherapist, but found my passion was still in talking with people, finding a more interactive conversational style to change. So I became a counselor. In Oregon, I’m called an “alternative counselor”.

I’m returning to school now, but you could say I did it backwards: I got some experience first, and did lots of my own work in my own counseling (And then got training in the methods that helped me move forward most), and now I’m going back to school.

For now, the lack of letters means that although I will work with you to deepen your connection to yourself and others, I don’t do diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses at all. For that stuff, I’m happy to help you find referrals… or work as part of a broader team to help support you.

I’ve had several clients who, after working with me for a month or two, had family members offer to pay for part or all of their ongoing work with me. Often, once loved ones notice a change in you, they become supportive. Other clients simply choose to pay out of pocket as they see the benefits and find that they’re able and willing to pay for them.

I kinda love the client who’s so smart that counselors have a hard time keeping up. I like to think a lot, too, and I enjoy exchanging knowledge and getting to understand you better through that lens. But I also have the opportunity here to help you approach the world through things other than the intellect… like feelings!

But I also love working with people who have a lot going on inside but can’t always show or tell me about it. Years back, I worked with kids. Some had minds that raced ahead and their mouths couldn’t keep up. Others had a hard time opening up to speak to adults—especially at first. But by being deeply curious and playful… and using a dash of humor and movement with them, these “non-talkers” and I were usually talking within minutes!

And they often help support the work in unexpected ways.

We might use a stuffed animal to represent that scary boss or frightening feeling with which you’ve been struggling. It helps us process the thoughts and emotions… and it helps alleviate fear. After all, it’s hard to be quite so scared of a boss when he or she has been a rubber ducky!

A client who was struggling with an internal critic once used a stuffed monkey to represent that critic. By the end of the session, the client could playfully “flip off” the monkey. Later, this client sent me a meme with a picture of that stuffed monkey with the words, “Sometimes, you just have to flip off the monkey.” 🙂

Some clients have favorite textures and toys in my office… others never touch any of it. Both are fine!

Clients and I tend to have meaningful conversation that feels natural and deeply interactive, and that helps them to feel more of their feelings, be in touch with more of their body, and to feel more grounded and authentic.

I also work to “get you” in ways other than talk—tuning into your shaking hands or the reaching in your eyes, for example. We’ll explore your deepest yearnings and hopes, your suppressed feelings… in short, what makes you… YOU.

Clients say they feel seen, heard, and “gotten” – and that we often go deeper together than they’ve been able to before, and in ways that feel safe and connected. When you and I create a space between us of welcome, compassion, and delight, new information arrives and so does a newfound sense of solidity and connection.
[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Do you give clients homework to do in between sessions?” admin_label=”Do you give clients homework to do in between sessions?” _builder_version=”4.0.7″ hover_enabled=”0″]In many sessions, there’s a moment where something inside, big or small, transforms. That transformation sometimes comes with words, a difference in posture, or a change in your beliefs about yourself.

We don’t always do homework but, when we do, it’s to help you to keep doing what comes naturally from that sense of you that we find in those moments.

So, I might say, “You see how your hands naturally open and your shoulders relax once you find those words, ‘I’m lovable.’? Practice that over the next week, and walk from that place of that knowing.”

Homework is generally not a mass-produced worksheet but, rather, something at which we arrive together. It’s something that produces an “ah-ha” for you that can naturally extend outside the office. I do have worksheets too with plain old boring skills, and they sometimes come in handy – but most of the time, we can find a more natural resource that arrives in a less stuffy format.

I also get supervision and consultation on helping you feel less alone and more met in your feelings and your experiences. This training focuses on how to feel for and with clients and how to act from a place of authenticity and deep care moment-to-moment.

I enjoy drawing from a diverse mix of knowledge and experience. You’ll probably bring me new ideas I hadn’t thought of, and I’ll look at them too. Clients are some of my most important trainers. They teach me what’s important to them, and I take that information the most seriously of all – more important than any protocol in any manual is your experience.
[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”What have your cats taught you about working with connection?” admin_label=”What have your cats taught you about working with connection?” _builder_version=”3.19.15″]Ah, I’m so glad you asked! Because cats have attachment styles, too!

One of them acts SO self-sufficient: always wanting to go outside, always coming back with “gifts” on our doorstep. For the longest time, I thought he needed nothing from us. Then, one day, as he was meowing, I tried talking to him in a tone I’d use to engage a baby. Now he comes to me for ‘that tone.’

Sometimes the strongest people have very young places that need a bit of nurturing, too. I support his independence, I praise his “gift-finding”, and I also nurture him in those moments when he comes for affection.

Another cat was abandoned early in life and has the fondest memories of being bottle-fed as a baby. This one likes to be cradled. He also has a hard time asking for nurturing directly… he just sits with his back to me when I’m interacting with the other cat. It’s as though he’s saying, “I don’t care about you at all. I don’t need you! Um…..you see me, right? Right here shunning you? I don’t need you! (Come pet me immediately).”

He’s adorable, and I’ve learned to delight in his sideways communications. I’ve taught him it’s okay to come to me directly instead of doing these ‘shunnings,’ and now he’ll come right up to me and bounce on his hind legs to say, “Pick me up!” When he reverts to sideways (Or to my back!) communications, I understand that too.

My other cat was most elusive in how to help. She’d jump in my lap, demand pets, and then bite me! It was as if she were always saying, “You’re not doing this correctly.” I finally discovered that she’s a high-intensity kitty who needs high-intensity pets. She likes firm contact, to know that I’m “right here.”

Yep, three cats with three attachment styles. I talk to each of them a little differently. And if you saw me in each of my sessions, you’d discover me finding a different rhythm, tone, and proximity to each client, too.

Nothing’s more fun to me than finding the style of each person (and cat!) that I meet.
